一枚だけ、The Blue Bells “I Sold My Heart To The Junkman”というレコードにまつわるお話を。
こちら、あのPatti LaBelle率いるLaBelleの前身グループ、The Blue Bellsの希少な1962年のデビューシングル。
記念すべきPatti LaBelleのファースト・キャリア・・・なのですが、
実際にはThe Starletsというグループの歌唱を口パクしていたみたいで・・・(その件で訴えられ、後に録り直しもしています)
ラベルにも堂々とTHE BLUE-BELLESと表記されていますが、この楽曲はThe Starletsの曲ということになります。
通常であれば、回収、録り直し or ラベル差し替えみたいなことになりそうですが、この曲はThe Blue Bellesの名前のまま大ヒット。
この曲をきっかけにグループとPatti LaBelleは有名になり、実際に歌ったStarletsは僅か4枚のシングルだけを残し解散。
もしかすると後のスターダムは彼女たちのものだったかも？と思うと、ちょっと可哀想ですね。
Starletsの歌唱がBlue Bellsの名義でリリースされた理由は、レーベルとの契約の問題。
たとえ契約上Starletsと名乗れなかったとしても、ちょ〜とお粗末すぎる話ですよね。これもこの時代ならではということでしょうか。
そんないにしえの悪徳プロダクションに想いを馳せつつ、彼女達のキュートに煌めくポップ・ミュージックを堪能してみてはいかがでしょうか。
